Simple salad

A simple salad can act as a healthy side dish, or, for extreme health cases, as an entire meal.

A salad begins with its principal ingredient, some sort of green, leafy plant, which can vary. Iceberg lettuce is popular for its neutral taste, but it is often considered healthier to use arugula, spinach, or other leaves.

Salad is often garnished with tomatoes, such as the cherry tomatoes depicted, and can be garnished with more healthy vegetables, such as carrot or onion peelings. Sometimes, salads will contain croutons, shredded cheese, or even bacon bits and pieces of chicken, to offer a greater variety of flavor. If such is unavailable, it will likely be necessary to add salad dressing.
